Expansion of media offerings

Microsoft
has announced that it has struck a partnership deal with Viacom whereby Viacom will provide content to be distributed to Microsoft. The deal is said to be valued at close to $500 million, and will include movies from Paramount and television content from Comedy Central and MTV networks. The distribution will be via Microsoft Xbox Live Market Place, which will provide Microsoft video offerings that are comparable to Apple’s iTunes video offerings.

In addition, the deal will include product placement, show development and advertising tie-ins that will feature Microsoft products in Viacom properties. Also, both companies will explore options to expand into the ever-growing cell phone market space.
