Intel might delay 22nm transition, Ivy Bridge platform

by on01 September 2011

Investment reduction rumoured
Intel is reportedly thinking about slowing down its planned 22nm transition to save costs. According to Digitimes, Intel could push back plans to delay to 22nm at Fab 24, which could result in a quarter long delay for Ivy Bridge.

The report claims that Intel will delay Ivy Bridge from the end of 2011 to March 2012, while mobile Ivy chips will be pushed back to April. If true, this could be very good news for AMD, as it will give it a much longer window of opportunity to catch up with Intel in the performance market, with Bulldozer derived products.

Worldwide PC demand is cooling down across the board. Many economic analysts now fear a double dip recession, prompted by volatility in the markets and debt crises in many of the world’s developed economies, hence an investment reduction would come as no surprise.
