Seagate shows off third generation hybrid drives

by on06 March 2013

3.5-inch and 2.5-inch flavours

Just days after Seagate announced that it will stop producing 7200rpm laptop drives the company shed more light on its hybrid drive plans. Seagate’s third generation hybrid drives, or SSHDs, are among the thinnest and lightest drives on the market and the company claims they will be affordable as well.

The Momentus XT series has been around for a while and at the moment the top SKU is a 750GB drive with 4GB of NAND cache. The new third-gen drives will apparently come in two sizes, 500GB and 1TB. The amount of NAND has been doubled to 8GB. Seagate claims the new drives are four times as fast as mechanical drives and up to 40 percent faster than its existing SSHDs. They are priced at $79 and $99 respectively, which sounds like a fair price.

However, this time around Seagate chose to expand its SSHD line-up with a couple of desktop 3.5-inch drives. The desktop versions come also come in two sizes, 1TB and 2TB, and they are priced at $99 and $149 respectively. The amount of NAND is the same, 8GB, and they sound like a pretty interesting alternative to plain HDDs in the desktop space.
