Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. issued an announcement that it plans to build a new lithium-ion battery plant in western Japan. The plant will be built in 2009.

Sanyo is the world's largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries. Sanyo’s investment in the plant was reported in the Nikkei business daily as 20 billion yen ($190 million). This new plant will produce PC batteries.

Sanyo also announced that it is building an additional lithium-ion battery plant in Japan, scheduled for completion by early to mid 2009. Together the two new factories will increase production capacity by 30 percent, to nearly 90 million cells per month.

Sanyo’s lithium ion batteries are used in approximately 4 out of every 10 mobile phones worldwide. Sanyo indicated that its growth drivers are solar battery cells and rechargeable batteries, and reported that it has earmarked 125 billion yen in capital spending for its rechargeable battery business for the next three years up to March 2011.
