In an unexpected move, Apple has updated its iPod Touch product lineup. First Apple has updated the 16GB model of the iPod Touch by adding a rear iSight camera and increasing the available colors to six. It has also added support for the iPod Touch loop wrist strap, while they still have to purchase the strap separately.

Apple has slashed the prices of the entire iPod Touch lineup, seeing the 16GB iPod Touch with the new colors and upgrades go from $229 to $199. The 32GB model is now only $249, down from $299, and the 64GB model has been dropped to $299 which is down from $399, making it quite a value. All models at the reduced price show in stock at the Apple online store and ready to ship within 24 hours.

The specs on the iPod Touch remain the same with all featuring the A5 processor, 4 inch Retina display, 5 megapixel rear camera, and front facing FaceTime HD camera. All three models will be running iOS 7 and include Apple’s EarPods as part of the package.

Some may question the need for Apple to put any effort into the iPod lineup since the success of the iPhone, but the iPod products are still big business for Apple. While they are not selling in the numbers like they used to be able to sell them in, they still sell quite well for the company. Apple has not updated the iPod Touch lineup since 2013, but this refresh is necessary one might argue as Apple still sold 2.7 million iPods last quarter. Apple is still offering the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, and the iPod Classic which still uses the click wheel navigation that started it all.
