China Labor Watch slams Samsung

by on02 July 2014

Child workers are the norm

Human rights organisation ‘China Labor Watch’ has slammed Samsung for not making improvements at its factories.

The outfit said in 2012 that child labour is more than norm than the exception throughout Samsung’s supplier factories, and student laborers happen to make up for 80 per cent of the entire workforce. Workers have poor working conditions which are akin to modern day slaves, as they have to slog away for long hours on end, in addition to forced overtime.

After that report came out, Samsung promised to improve the working conditions but a recent external audit showed that there was not much improvement made to its China-based factories. The report complained that Samsung has failed to provide adequate safety equipment to its workers. Excessive working hours are still a major problem at the plant.
