by on19 March 2015

Gaming motherboards and chassis too

Supermicro is well known brand in the server market, and they make some of the best motherboards in this professional niche.

That is why we were pleasantly surprised to see the company moving into the consumer market. They are doing really well in the server market, and in addition to motherboards and other traditional gear, they also have GRID gaming servers. However, they have decided to compete in the gaming market as well, going up against established consumer brands like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and EVGA.

Supermicro will soon start shipping a gaming PC called SYS 5038AD-I. This is a single processor gaming system based on an Intel Core i7 5960X Extreme Edition processor, 16GB of DDR4 non-ECC 2133MHz memory, Asetek high performance liquid cooling, dual Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 2GB DDR5 graphics and a 1200W Platinum PSU.

The system uses Supermicro’s own S5 aluminium/steel mid-tower case and high performance C7X99-OCE motherboard. The board supports overclocking and it can deal with higher end graphics cards including Nvidia Titan and AMD Radeon cards. The demo system used three GTX 980 cards for demonstration purposes.
