Jeep maker forced to recall SUVs

Hacking woes

Italian company Fiat Chrysler must be regretting jacking computers under the bonnet of US WW2 technology.

Fiat Chrysler has announced that it is recalling 7,810 sport utility vehicles, or Jeeps as the rest of the world has known them for the last 70 years.

The recalled vehicles include 2015 Jeep Renegade SUVs equipped with 6.5-inch touchscreens. The problem is that the software in the radios is wide open and can be hacked.

The announcement comes more than a month after the company recalled about 1.4 million vehicles in the United States for a software update.

Cybersecurity researchers used the Internet to turn off a car's engine as it drove, escalating concerns about the safety of Internet-connected vehicles.

So far, no one is aware of any injuries related to the hack. FCA said that more than half of the recalled vehicles are still to be old and will be serviced before they are sold.

The recalls are showing how risky it is making higher tech cars without adopting some pretty hard security requirements.
