MS16-072/KB 3163622 patch breaks group policy settings

Software giant Microsoft has admitted that its MS16-072/KB 3163622 patch will cause headaches for system administrators.

The Admins are claiming that the update breaks some Group Policy settings, causes drives appear on domain systems that should be hidden, borks mapping drives and refuses to apply typical GPO settings.

Initially it looked like a fault that only applied to Windows 7 client PCs but now its borking ways have been seen in Windows 8.1, and even all versions of Windows 10 clients. It is probably better if you run a network to give the upgrade a miss.

The patch rolled out on Patch Tuesday. Early on Thursday morning, Microsoft updated the KB 3163622 article saying that the problem may occur if the Group Policy Object is missing the Read permissions for the Authenticated Users group or if you are using security filtering and are missing Read permissions for the domain computers group.

Redmond suggests fixing the problem by using the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC.MSC) and add the Authenticated Users group with Read Permissions on the Group Policy Object (GPO). Adding the Domain Computers group with read permission or pulling the patch and stamping on it, or killing it with fire.
