Release delayed while DICE works on backend

In what has come as a surprise announcement, DICE announced that they would be suspending the Battlefield Heroes beta effective starting tonight, so that they can move forward on additional work and development on the backend.

The news that the beta was being suspended came as a bit of a surprise due to the fact that rumors were flying that the company was ready to go to release with the game, which would be a first in the EA Play 4 Free model that the company is trying to develop on the PC.

According to our sources, DICE wants to work more on the parts that the players don’t see, such as the backend. These are areas that need polish and the company is working hard to get this done; and due to the fact that they will be forced on this development they will not meet the goal of getting the title released this year as originally thought. In fact, it is suspected that players will not even see the game available again until they reopen the beta sometime in the first quarter of 2009.

The sources have commented that EA and DICE want to also work more on the Website and social networking aspects of the game, which both still feel need additional work. The focus of the Play 4 Free model is advertising and micropayments to generate revenue for the game and it is believed that the Website format and social networking activities will have to be very engaging to draw the numbers that EA and DICE need to make the title profitable.

Several other sources are telling us that the final launch of the title may not happen until early spring of 2009, which fits with the recent announcements that have been made.
