Italy’s under-resourced internet is taking a battering from millions of Italians working from home, and there is some concern that smoke will start pouring out of the back and dangerous-looking steam appearing from under the bonnet.

However Telecom Italia’s network’s CEO Luigi Gubitosi appears to be confident that it will not melt like mozzarella in a pizza oven as Italians attempt to work from home.

He said in what may be famous last words: “ Telecom Italia’s network is solid and stable and can hold “with no problems.”

Gubitosi added that with the anti-coronavirus lockdown measures imposed by the government and an increase in work from home and the use of online learning platforms, overall traffic on landlines has gone up almost 100 percent and has risen 30 percent on mobile lines.

Things are not going so well on Fastweb where performance has been spottier than a Roman teenager who has been overindulging on a porchetta diet.
