Updated: A different design approach

Although netbooks started out with fairly basic and drab designs, it seems like the manufacturers are now competing about who can come up with the most unique and unusual looking designs and Samsung has just taken netbooks in a slightly different direction in terms of design.

Samsungs new netbook model is the N310 which looks quite different from Samsungs previous products and not only will it be available in four different colours, but Samsung has pulled out all stops to make it look like the N310 has a soft-cover casing.

We have a feeling that the N310 will be a love it or hate it design, although the black model looks quite smart, but we're not so sure about the blue, teal and orange colour options. The rounded edges makes the N310 look quite different as well, if someone old school. Some of the core specifications such as CPU is still glaring with its omission, but what is available doesn't really make the N310 stand out.

The N310 has a 10.1-inch screen suggestion a 16:9 panel with 1,024x576 resolution, WiFi 802.11b/g. Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, optional HSDPA and WiBRO (a version of WiMAX for Korea), a 1.3 Megapixel webcam, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive (standard netbook spec's). At 1.23kg it's not the lightest netbook it either, but at least the claimed battery life of 5h on the standard battery isn't half bad and there's an option to get an extended battery with a claimed 11h battery life. The keyboard has borrowed inspiration from Sony's VAIO range of notebooks, but Samsung isn't the first to copy Sony with regards to this.

The N310 is expected to be available worldwide once it launches, although we have to details on when this will be of how much it will cost.

Update: The official press release is out and it turns out that akihabaranews got the name slightly wrong this morning, as the new netbook from Samsung is called the N310, not the NC310. The CPU model has yet to be confirmed, but it's an Atom processor. Other details include three USB 2.0 ports, a 3-in-1 card reader and the fact that Bluetooth is optional. The N310 should be available in May.

Update 2: It's official, the N310 will use an Atom N270 processor and it has a 16:10 display with 1,024x600 resolution, despite it measuring 10.1-inches which so far has been limited to 16:9 panels with 1,024x576 panels. The N310 will retail for £399 (€429/$586).
