According to Qualcomm, the new reference design brings better performance, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform, as well as a sleeker design, developed by Goertek, which brings a 40 percent thinner profile and a more ergonomically balanced weight distribution.

The reference design uses a dual micro-OLED binocular display, providing 1920x1080 resolution per eye and up to 90Hz refresh rate with no-motion-blur feature, aiming to deliver a better AR experience. The device also features monochrome cameras and one RGB camera on the smart viewer enabling six-degrees of freedom (6DoF) head tracking and hand tracking with gesture recognition for AR precision.

According to Qualcomm, the new Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design enables a wireless split processing architecture, distributing workloads between the smartphone and AR glasses. It achieves under 3ms latency between the devices. Thanks to the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900, the device features Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth connectivity.

In combination with the FastConnect XR Software Suite upcoming devices can get improved M2R2P (motion-to-render-to-photon) latency, reduced jitter, and less interference, as well as get low power operation, and more.

Qualcomm says that the Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design is now available for select partners and the wider availability is expected in the coming months. Hopefully, we'll see some of the first devices soon.
