Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, England, to parents of Indian descent in 1980 and married Akshata Murthy in 2009. Murthy is an Indian national and IT outsourcing giant Infosys is the family business.  Her dad is the CEO, and she owns a per cent of the outfit.

Sunak has also done well as an investment banker, and the pair have a net worth of £730 million more if you melt them down for soap.

Sunak's anointment has led to enthusiastic expressions of support from India, with Prime minister Narendra Modi linking Sunak to the Hindu holiday of Diwali. One local newspaper even gave Sunak the nickname "son-in-law of Bengaluru."

While it is true that Sunak becomes the first British prime minister of South Asian descent, as well as the first non-white person to hold the office, there are more concerns about his links to Infosys.  

Akshata Murthy is not involved in the operations of Infosys anymore, but the company has contracts around the UK, among them a £22 million contract to swap out SAP R/3 systems with Oracle Fusion for East Sussex County Council. Infosys has also, for years, held a significant core technology contract with UCAS, the admissions service for UK higher education.

It is also likely to be bidding for more government contracts within Sunak’s term. This means each time Infosys gets one there will be claims that the PM will benefit and will likely get a lot of attention from the press. Infosys has not been free of scandals over the years, the last in 2019 but it does mean that every time something goes wrong the PM will be drawn in.
