The Intel Connects Cables claim that they can replace traditional 24-gauge copper cables with an optical alternative.It claims that such a move would allow larger clusters that are easier to cool.

The new cables can support 20 Gbits/second for Infiniband-based clusters and have a reach of 100 meters compared to about 10 meters for copper.
Intel general manager Tom Willis told Electronic Times that optical cables "will allow clusters to get much larger.
With 100-meter cables it is possible to build clusters of tens of thousands of CPUs across multiple floors.
The Intel cables are 84 percent lighter, 83 percent smaller and have lower bit-error rates and conversion latencies than copper.
