Merkel mulls aiding German chipmakers
Silicon Saxony needs a break
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said politicians should consider aiding Qimonda and other chipmakers based in Germany, in order to assure their survival during the economic crisis.
"With Qimonda, politicians are definitely called upon, in conjunction with AMD, Qimonda, Infineon - these are all difficult cases, and this is the sole cluster of chipmakers in Europe - perhaps to take care of them in such a way that allows for (their) survival..." said Merkel at a German industry conference.
However, Infineon CEO Peter Bauer claims the company is doing quite well, and that liquidity is not an issue. Qimonda, which filed for bankruptcy protection back in January, is an entirely different story.
