Microsoft And Amazon work on High-Def DVDs

Independents get their shot at technology

Microsoft and Amazon have a plan to make it easier for independent filmmakers to produce and distribute movies on high-definition DVDs.

A new manufacturing process pioneered by the  Amazon subsidiary  CustomFlix aims to bring as many as 1,000 feature-length indie films to Amazon customers using its CustomFlix DVD On Demand.

The technology makes DVDs on demand as soon as they are ordered online.  They will be formatted in Microsoft's VC-1 video codec.
