Video outfit Netflix is likely to upset the fruit themed
gadget maker Apple by bringing an application that will run its "Watch
Instantly" streaming service to the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch via
Wi-Fi.
"Watch Instantly" allows Netflix subscribers to
view over 12,000 movies and TV episodes, via the Xbox 360, LG Blu-ray players,
TiVos, Sony Bravia HDTVs and many other devices. However the move is likely to cause problems in Apple
land where such a service is not approved by the patron saint of Apple Steve
Jobs.
St Steve has signed a deal with the carrier AT&T for
exclusive rights to the iPhone and AT&T hates video streaming with a
passion. It already throttles bandwidth intense applications so it
is fairly certain that Netflix will not be allowed to run its service over 3G.
It is possible that St Steve will allow “Watch Instantly”
to be seen. But if it does it will be relegated to Wi-Fi only and about
as useful as a chocolate teapot.
