Watch yourself on the move

For anyone who wanted to film themselves while on the move, Lanner Electronics has come up with the sort of gear you need.

Lanner Electronics has announced the release of the VW-1104, a compact mobile DVR platform built on the Intel Atom CPU and offering Wi-Fi, 3G mobile and GPS communications along with four-channel H.264 video capture and compression. The gear is designed for putting in trains, buses and emergency vehicles to provide security and help fleet management.

The VW-1104 includes four BNC inputs for capturing CCTV video and an onboard codec chip to convert video streams to compressed H.264 video, allowing it to serve as a compact surveillance system that can be installed in moving vehicles. It is all powered by an ultra-low voltage Intel Atom N270 CPU which means low power consumption and the lack of need for a fan.

Multimedia features include HDMI and VGA video outputs, H.264 video compression and G.711 audio compression. As for communication features, the VW-1104 incorporates Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 3G wireless supporting UTMS and WCDMA, and a GPS receiver for location tracking.

The VW-1104's x86-based Atom processor speeds time to market for application developers, said Lanner, adding that the company also provides an SDK and reference software to help customers get started even more quickly. The system supports Linux and Windows, and the SDK includes features for alarm I/O, streaming, RS-485 control and display. No word on price yet.
