Space left for it in the 3G iPod Touch

All of the rumors and pictures that were circulating on the Internet showing an iPod Touch prototype that included a camera are now confirmed as real as it gets. A tear down of the new 3G iPod Touch confirms that Apple must have been ready to add the camera as part of the 3G release of the iPod Touch as there is space for it, but for some reason Apple elected not to include it in the new version.

That is not the only secret that the tear down of the latest iPod Touch reveals, as the Broadcom BCM4325 that supplies the Wi-Fi support in the latest iPod Touch supports the 802.11n standard (although not activated). It is unknown why Apple elected not to turn on the 802.11n support in the iPod Touch, but the fact that the older version of the chip that is used in the latest iPhone does not offer 802.11n support could have at least something to do with their decision. Apple has had a pattern in the past of not always using all of the features offered by some of the chips in their products.

One of the other features of the Broadcom chip that Apple selected is its ability to transmit and receive FM signals. This has led to the belief that Apple might add FM tuner support at some point in the future, much like the FM tuner that was added with the latest release of the iPod Nano. It is possible that Apple could be looking at this for the iPod Touch at some point in the future.

It just seems that every revision of the iPod product family includes more and more new features that make users want to upgrade. We have to admit that we sometimes wonder why Apple just doesn’t go the extra mile and get all of the these features in the latest release; but just think of all of the upgrades that they would miss out on selling if they offered everything that the device was capable of in one release.
