If you can hold it that long

In a recent
interview with the Financial Times, Yoichi Wada, Chief Executive of Square Enix, said he expects Nintendo to launch a new Wii console in 2011. We've heard similar rumours in the past, but when they come from the CEO of Square Enix, we tend to give them a bit more credence.

Wada added that he expects the new console to match the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in terms of graphics power. Unlike its competitors, the current generation Wii is standard def and doesn't even feature an HDMI out. As 1080p panels become available to the great unwashed, standard def is slowly becoming pointless.

Wada said he doesn't expect Xbox 360 and PS3 sales to soar following the introduction of motion controllers, as they don't add enough functionality to make a difference.

Nintendo is expected do slightly drop Wii pricing over the next few weeks, probably to around $200. However, the Xbox 360 also comes dirt cheap, and even the PS3 is catching up in terms of affordability.
