Gem & Paramount teaming for indie retailers

Distributor Gem in the U.K. has been working with Paramount Pictures to create two new special Xbox 360 bundle offerings that are to be made available to independent retailers who buy products from Gem. Neither of these two bundle offerings are official Microsoft offerings, but instead special re-packaging that Gem has worked with Paramount to create for the holiday season.

The two U.K. bundles from Gem will be used to promote the latest Star Trek movie, and the second Transformers movie known as Revenge of the Fallen. One thing that is immediately odd about both bundles is that neither of them includes Star Trek or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on DVD as part of the bundle package.

From what our sources tell us, each of the bundles will include the Xbox 360 Elite console package and a second black wireless controller. The Star Trek bundle will include a movie-themed USB flash drive with the movie on it and 800 Microsoft Points to download the Star Trek PDLC title from Xbox Live Arcade. The Transformers bundle will include a movie-themed USB flash drive with the movie on it and a copy of the Xbox 360 version of the latest Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen game title.

Our sources don’t have a clue yet what the actual pricing will be for the bundles or when they will actually start appearing on retailer shelves. From what we expect, the Star Trek bundle will likely arrive on November 16th or perhaps shortly thereafter, as this is when the Star Trek movie is slated for release on DVD in the U.K. As for the Transformers bundle, we expect it to arrive on November 30th or just after, as this is when the DVD for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released on DVD in the U.K.

The special bundles that Gem is releasing in the U.K. are something new that we have not seen a lot of in the past from distributors. The decision to team up with Paramount to create these, including some special packaging for the bundles, could be an interesting test to what the level of sales it is possible to achieve with a bundle of this type. According to what our sources are telling us, it is likely that these bundles will only be on the shelves at independent retailers in the U.K. and the big chain stores will not get them. From what we know so far, it is highly unlikely that we will see these bundles sold outside of the U.K., but if successful it could be something that other distributors might try in the future to draw attention and move products.
