Globalfoundries' first high-k metal gate

Globalfoundries
and ARM have shed some light on the upcoming 28nm manufacturing process and plans for upcoming processors.

ARM will showcase its first 28nm wafer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and Globalfoundries will start producing the new chips sometime in the second half of 2010.

This will be Globalfoundries' first 28nm high-k metal gate production line. The companies have developed a mobile system-on-chip platform based on ARM's Cortex A9 core and they are promising impressive energy figures. Compared to 40nm and 45nm processes, the new tech should allow a 40 percent performance boost with 30 percent lower power consumption.

Of course, the new chips will be aimed at the mobile market and Globalfoundries claims they could allow partners to double the battery life of their toys.
