Asus has no plans for tablet price cut

by on04 October 2011

Hopes to compete in $499 market
Asus CEO Jerry Shen dismissed reports claiming Asus was planning to drop tablet prices and delay the launch of its next generation Eee Pad Transformer.

Shen said Asus was on track to launch the new Transformer later this year, with a price tag of $499. Asus is clearly positioning the Transformer as a premium product and it will probably be the first tablet with a quad-core processor, courtesy of Nvidia. Shen believes Android 4.0 will mark a major step forward for Android based tablets and he expects Asus to ship between 1.5 and 2 million tablets this year.

Interestingly, Asus seems quite optimistic about Amazon’s prospects in the tablet market. The company projects Kindle Fire will account for 20 to 30 percent of the market, but it is convinced 10-inch tablets are the new black and its Eee Pads should maintain competitiveness in the 10-inch market.

Somebody should probably ring Asus and tell them Amazon is also preparing a 10-inch Kindle.
