Chromebooks kick Apple out of key market

by on03 December 2014

Kids, who can trust them eh?

For a while now the fruity cargo cult Apple has been indoctrinating kids into believing its weird religion while they are still at school. Jobs’ Mob controlled the US education market where kids could not get enough of their Macbooks and tablets.

Then Google released its Chromebook concept and it was rubbished by the Tame Apple Press who spat all sorts of bile into their Apple computers to get the whole idea spiked. Unfortunately for Apple, parents and kids saw right through that and now the Chromebook has overtaken Apple gear for the first time.

According to IDC, Google has overtaken Apple in United States schools. Around 715,000 Chromebooks have been shipped to U.S. schools in the third quarter, while Apple shipped 702,000 iPads to schools. With these new numbers, Chromebooks now account for a quarter of the educational market. Who would have thought that affordable price, portability and always being online would have outsold something that is controlled and expensive?

Laptops running Chrome OS have seen a dizzying increase. They have gone from zero to a quarter of the US educational market in only two years. Chromebooks start at $199, while last year’s iPad Air, when educational discounts are being applied, costs $379. Schools are buying in bulk, they have to take sometimes the decision that is accordant to their budget, as well. Another reason is that many school corporations seem to prefer the full keyboard found on Chromebooks instead of the touchscreen found on iPads.

IDC analyst Rajani Singh said that the growth of Chromebook is a major concern for Apple’s iPad. He also points out that the need for a keyboard becomes very important as the average age of the student increases. IDC expects iPad shipments to go down this year for the first time in history.
