BT will gut its staff by at least a third

Hung, drawn and quartered on the BT Tower

BT Group is planning to lose between a half and a third of its staff by the end of 2030 and replace some of them with AI.

BT has 130,000 staff and contractors and these will be reduced to between 75,000 and 90,000 by 2030.

CEO Philip Jansen said that by the end of the 2020s, BT Group will rely on a much smaller workforce and a significantly reduced cost base. Apparently, this means that the new BT Group will be a “leaner business with a brighter future.”

More than 10,000 jobs will go through digitisation, automation, and the use of AI in its processes.

The cuts also include 15,000 jobs building fibre-optic broadband and 5G mobile networks and 10,000 servicing and repairing them. Once those networks are fully rolled out, BT won't need as many workers to build or maintain them. We guess it is not thinking about 6G.
