As not to compete with COD Modern Warfare 2

After changing the branding strategy today on COD Modern Warfare 2, as we told you about in another story today, Activision has announced that it will be delaying the launch of the Raven-developed Singularity title till March of 2010. The reason has more to do with COD Modern Warfare 2 than anything else.

According to our sources Activision believes that the launch of Singularity this fall as planned could be negatively impacted by the COD Modern Warfare 2. From our understanding, Activision is worried that launching a second FPS title in the same timeframe as COD Modern Warfare 2 could hurt the sales of Singularity; many gamers are likely to only purchase one title, which Activision believes will be COD Modern Warfare 2, expected to lead the charge for the holiday sales title.

The decision to push Singularity back also gives the developers additional time to tweak and improve the title prior to release. Since Singularity is a new title that many gamers have never heard of before, our sources suggest that Activision wants to put maximum effort into getting the word out about this title and they can’t do this if the majority of their efforts are focused on COD Modern Warfare 2.

The early buzz on Singularity is quite good. It is a sci-fi shooter with a Russian slant that might be a popular title if promoted properly, and Activision could be right that the holiday season might not be the right time to try to launch something new at the same time that they are launching the next in the series of their most popular franchise.
