EA seeking rights to Kingdoms of Amalur?
Would like to see the sequel get made
Frank Gibeau, the President of EA Labels, said he is hopeful that one day a sequel for Kingdom of Amalur will get made and that EA would surely like to be the one who publishes it. Gibeau says that the game got good reviews and that it was terrific.
While Gibeau went on to talk about the creativity of the team that Curt Schilling put together, he expressed his sadness as to how things ended up.
What Gibeau did not say is if Electronic Arts might be one of the parties who are interested in acquiring the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur when it is expected the State of Rhode Island will attempt to sell off both the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur, as well as the unfinished MMO codenamed Copernicus.
While it is expected that Copernicus will be harder sell because it still has a long way to go before being finished, the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur might be an easier sell as pretty much all in possession of the IP, and they could if necessary reinvent the title in building a sequel.
Sources that we have spoken with in the development community suggest that it still might be a risk to take a chance on the Kingdoms of Amalur IP, as the sales of the first one did not set the industry on fire; but the reviews were solid enough that it could be a good franchise to build upon if a developer were looking to own their own IP. “I expect that once the Kingdoms of Amalur IP becomes available for purchase, that a number of both publishers and studios will be interested if the price were right”, one studio head told us.
