Road Redemption heads to Kickstarter

The spirit of Road Rash attempts to find funding

Road Rash fans have wanted to see a new next generation sequel to the motorcycle combat game from back in the Sega Genesis era. While series creator Dan Geisler has expressed a desire to bring an updated reinvention of the game back, EA still holds the rights to Road Rash and has been slow to act on doing it. We think it could be in part due to mixed sales numbers that other resurrections of retro games have received.

Enter Road Redemption, which is best described as a Road Rash-inspired game that the developers at DarkSeas Games are hoping to get funding to create. The development team is stacked with experienced developers from such studios as Sega, Sony, Bioware, Gameloft, Tequila Works, Disney Interactive, 2K Sports, Electronic Arts, and Lucasarts. This is not a development team that lacks experience. (Dan Geisler isn’t involved in the Road Redemption project.)

Road Redemption is seeking funding by using Kickstarter; the studio is seeking $160,000 to fund the game for release in July 2014 for the PC, Mac, and Linux. Stretch goals would see the game make its way toward a potential console release, but that is still up in the air. So far, the developer has only been able to raise a little over $34K of its funding goal, but they will have almost a month left to get the word out and get more people to fund it.

From what we can see in the four-minute video, the game does a good job at creating the Road Rash style experience, and it looks pretty good for such an early concept video. If you have been waiting for a new Road Rash experience, this looks like a project that is worth getting behind. With such a deep development cast, it should deliver quite a good game.
