IFixit tears down new Xbox One S

Priced at $399

iFixit has voided its Xbox one warranty to see what is under the bonnet of the new games console and found all sorts of surprises.

We already knew that it would have something from AMD at the centre but it turns out that it has a X949211-001 DG4001FYG87IA chipset with a 1.75 GHz AMD "Jaguar" 8-core CPU and a +900 Mhx overclocked 914 MHz AMD Radeon Graphics GPU.

The Xbox One S features a SATA III hard drive, a Seagate Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 2 TB 5400 RPM with 32 MB Cache. This is a slight upgrade over the SATA II drive in the original Xbox One.

Released on August 2, the Xbox One S comes at an interesting time for Microsoft. It is getting a kicking from Sony. It is the first to have a slimmed down version of its black box.

It is prettier and smaller one and with its native support for 4K and HDR, is a lot better than the original Xbox One. It weighs about a pound and a half less than its fat forbear. It is also a bit quieter despite its internal power supply.

The front USB port has been moved to the actual front instead of the left side and a clicky power button replaces the touch pad.  At the moment, you can only get the 2TB hard drive version ($399), but later this month smaller 500GB ($299) and 1TB ($349) varieties will become available.
