AMD seems to have done well with its Radeon HD4xxx series of discrete mobile GPUs, announcing that it has taken the lead in the discrete notebook graphics market.

Bear in mind that it did have some help from Nvidia, which got its fair share of bad press following thermal issues on its last gen Geforce 8xxx series parts used in a number of designs by leading notebook vendors.

AMD recorded a 36.5 percent market share gain in the market over the first six months of 2009, and an 87.3 percent increase in the number of units shipped in Q2 sequentially. All in all, it now has a 53 percent market share in discrete notebook graphics.

AMD is now claiming over 200 design wins for its HD4000 series mobile parts, which sounds impressive. However, it's worth pointing out that its 40nm parts, announced back at CeBIT, don't seem to have taken off well.
