Nvidia kills off GeForce RTX 2060, 2060 Super, GTX 1660 and 1660 Super

Opening a void in the mid-range

The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn claiming that the graphics chip maker named after a Roman pizza is opening a void within its mid-range offerings by killing off its GeForce RTX 2060,  2060 Super, GTX 1660, and 1660 Super graphics cards.

According to Tom's Hardware Nvidia has phased out some of the last remnants of the Turing graphics card era. Amazon has the RTX 2060 for $179 which is cheap and the Zotac GTX 1660 for $179 and GTX 1660 Super for a low $199. There does appear to be a  "small amount of inventory," of the GTX 1660/Super TU116 GPUs.

What is strange about Nvidia getting rid of the cards is that it has little to address a significant and popular consumer segment -- just the Ampere generation GeForce RTX 3050. This means that Nvidia has effectively nothing to match AMD.  While it is fair to say that these old Turing cards were not going to match AMD's offerings anyway, the fact that Nvidia has pulled back completely is a surprise.

Tom's suggests that Nvidia needs to widen the appeal of the RTX 3050 and could make a desktop RTX 3050 Ti and reduce the price of the current RTX 3050 to better suit its performance level.
