2.5-inch BarraCuda in Backup Plus Portable Drive

Following the launch of its highest capacity 2.5-inch 5TB BarraCuda HDD earlier, Seagate has now squeeze that same HDD inside an aluminum enclosure allowing it to claim the world's first 2.5-inch USB 3.0 5TB external drive with the Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive 5TB.

Based on the same BarraCuda 2.5-inch 5TB HDD introduced earlier, which uses Seagate's 2.5-inch shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology and multi-tier caching, the new Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive 5TB external drive comes with an anodized aluminum enclosure, available in black, silver, red or blue color options, and uses USB 3.0 interface to transfer both power and data to the drive. The same Backup Plus Portable Drive is also available in a 4TB version.

In case you missed it, the 2.5-inch BarraCuda drive uses 1TB SMR platters, spins at 5400 RPM and comes with 128MB of cache.

Measuring 78x114.5x20.5mm, the sleek looking Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive 5TB is compatible with both PCs and Macs and even includes Dashboard software for Apple OS, Windows, iOS or Android. Seagate also gives free 2 years of 200GB cloud storage with the purchase of the new Backup Plus Portable drive.

Although it supports Apple Macs, since it uses the USB 3.0 interface, it will be incompatible with the new Macbook Pro 2016 notebook, at least until you get an adapter.

Unfortunately, the highest capacity badge also comes at a price premium so the Backup Plus Portable Drive 5TB will sell for US $190, which is significantly higher than what you get for the same 4TB HDD, currently priced at around US $120.
