Branded images will be bothering you soon

Google Inc. has announced that it has made available brand-image advertising for mobile phones. Google indicated that is has designed mobile images that look the same as standard graphical display ads for desktop computer Web pages, except that these are smaller in size to fit mobile phone screen sizes. Google says it has done this to get into the emerging market for advertising on phones.

The mobile ads are said to be targeted according to key words that mobile phone users type into their phones when using Internet search technology, and are priced on a cost-per-click basis.  The ads must link to Web pages that are able to work with mobile phone technology. So far, only one image ad per mobile page is displayed, due to the small sized screens on mobile phones. The mobile branded ads are now available in 13 national markets, including Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Russia, Spain, U.K. and the U.S., according to Google.

We dread the beginning of seeing those annoying pop-up ads -- announcing things we didn’t really want to know and blinking while we are talking on the phone or browsing for some important business information while using a smart phone. It doesn’t matter whether the ads are sent to a ‘targeted’ audience or not – they are still ads to us, and the next item for our mobile phones may be pop-up blockers.
