Mobile Internet Device, Tegra announced

Today
is the first day of Mobile World Congress 09 that started in Barcelona Spain and Nvidia used this show to introduce its Tegra 600 “super computer on a chip” that should enable $99 Mobile internet device (MID). We have to admit that it sounds rather interesting.

Such a device will enable OEMs and ODMs to bring devices based on Tegra platform with amazing level of functionality at prices as low as $99.

The device should offer support for 720p and 1080p video playback, promises days of use between charges and full Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. Furthermore, Tegra 600 powered device should have optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience, a complete software solution including Microsoft Windows Embedded CE OS, application viewers, full Internet browser, UI framework, board support package (BSP), software development kit (SDK), Web mail client, and more.

The device will have 3G support via ST Ericsson’s U335 chip but Nvidia didn’t announce any design wins. The company said that the first design wins will come in second half of 2009. The Android logo was used for the press release but neither Google nor Android were not mentioned. You can check the release here
