Samsung licenses PowerVR SGX graphics

by on11 November 2011

We are confused, too

Imagination Technologies, the designer of PowerVR SGX graphics, has announced a licensing deal with Samsung for its line of multiprocessor graphics designs.

Samsung aims to use PowerVR SGX graphics in multiple upcoming SoC designs aimed at the mobile and consumer markets.

The relatively brief statement fails to disclose any specifics, but it is somewhat surprising. Yesterday we wrote about ARM’s new Mali-T658 core and Samsung will be one of the first companies to embrace it. Despite this, the Korean giant believes in has plenty of room for PowerVR SGX graphics as well.

Things seem to be heating up in mobile graphics. ARM is gearing up to introduce Mali-T604 graphics next year, followed by the recently announced T658, which should be ten times faster than the current Mali-400MP. Imagination Technologies currently holds the performance crown with its SGX 543MP2 core of Apple A5 fame, and its SGX 540 is used in numerous high-end Android phones as well, including Nexus phones. Let’s not forget Nvidia’s Tegra 3, either. Its graphics subsystem is said to be three times as fast as the one used on Tegra 2.
