The 5G networks around the world have just started booting up and Qualcomm’s President Cristiano Amon was happy to tell us that there are 75 5G design wins in the pipeline.

Considering that Qualcomm helped accelerate the 5G deployment by a whole year, this is an astonishing result. Just a few years back, we were expecting the first 5G networks to show up in 2020 and with mass deployment later.

It took years for 4G to scale, but this won't be the case with 5G. Every operator on the planet has a 5G plan, and most of them in China, Europe, and the USA will launch in 2019. Some carriers will wait until 2020, and that includes a phone manufacturer called Apple. Four months ago, in January 2019, the number of publicly announced 5G designs by Qualcomm was officially set at 30

Oppo, Xiaomi, and Huawei launched 5G phones

On a separate note, Swisscom launched the first commercially available 5G phone by Oppo on May 1. Oppo can claim to be the first, but Oppo is not the company that is making a real impact in Europe, as Europeans instead will go for Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G that is about to launch its 5G phone in Switzerland today.

Cristiano Amon's promise in October 2019

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is the third contender expected to launch today in Swisscom and is cearly the only non Qualcomm powered 5G solution.

Real 5G is finally happening in Europe, but it won't impact you personally until your country and your operator launch a 5G service in the area you live or work. The important thing is that the 5G is not something imaginary and abstract, it exists in the real world, and there will be more to come.

As Cristiano likes to say, 5G is here and you better believe it repeatedly. To data plan skeptics who will comment below that 5G will help dry their small data caps faster, to the best of our knowledge most 5G networks will offer vast amounts of data and even unlimited plans to boost your 5G powered experience.
