Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 comes in two sizes

13.5-inch with Intel or 15-inch with AMD

Microsoft has now officially revealed all the juicy details regarding its new Surface Laptop 3 lineup, including the choice of two Intel CPUs for the 13.5-inch version, and two custom AMD APUs for the 15-inch version.

As detailed earlier, we are looking at a 13.5-inch and 15-inch version. The Surface Laptop 3 13.5" will be available with Intel's 10th gen Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs CPUs, while the Surface Laptop 3 15" will come with Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 custom APUs.

Smaller Surface Laptop 3 is all Intel and gets WiFi 6

The smaller Surface Laptop 3 13.5" measures at 308x223x14.5mm and weighs 1,288g with Sandstone and Matte Black color options and slightly less in Cobalt Blue and Platinum, 1,265g. Bear in mind that Sandstone and Matte Black come with metal palm rests, while Platinum and Cobalt Blue have Alcantara palm rests.

The Surface Laptop 3 13.5" has a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with 10 point multi-touch, 2256x1504 resolution, leaving it with 201PPI of pixel density, and Surface-standard 3:2 aspect ratio.

It is powered by either the quad-core Intel Core i5-1035G7 or the quad-core Core i7-1065G7 CPU, both coming with Intel Iris Plus Graphics. You can also equip it with either 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of removable SSD storage.

As it is based on Intel's platform, you also get 802.11ax WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Surface Laptop 3 15" is all about AMD and custom APUs

The Surface Laptop 3 15" is an odd-ball, as this is the first Surface Laptop with a 15-inch screen. The Surface Book 2 was available with both 13.5- and 15-inch screens.  It is also the first Surface with AMD hardware, which is a big win, maybe for both companies.

Measuring at 339.5x244x14.69mm, it is not actually that much thicker than the 13.5-inch version, which is quite an impressive thing. It weighs 1,542g, and only comes in Platinum and Matte Black color options, while Sandstone and Cobalt Blue are reserved for the 13.5-incher.

It has a 15-inch PixelSense touchscreen display with 2496x1664 resolution, leaving it with the same 201PPI pixel density, just like the Surface Laptop 3 13.5".

Although we did know about the custom AMD Ryzen 7 3780U Microsoft Surface Edition APU, which comes with Radeon RX Vega 11 GPU, there is also a Ryzen 5 3580U Microsoft Surface Edition APU choice, which comes with Radeon Vega 9 graphics. Unfortunately, this is as far as details go, so we'll have to wait for someone to get their hands on these to get full specifications.

As it is AMD's platform, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 sticks with 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0.

Both Surface Laptop 3 devices share a lot of things and come on October 22nd

Just like the Surface Pro 7, Microsoft equipped both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 with USB-C and USB-A ports, as well as 3.5mm audio jack, and Surface Connect port. Unlike the Surface Pro 7, you only get Windows Hello face authentication camera and 720p HD f2.0 camera, both at the front. At least it also comes with dual far-field Studio Mics and Omnisonic Speakers with Dolby Audio Premium.

As we wrote earlier, Microsoft has given the Surface Laptop 3 better keyboard with 1.33mm key travel, as well as a 20 percent bigger trackpad, fast-charging that can hit 80 percent in about an hour. Battery life is rated at 11.5 hours of typical device usage for both versions.

As noted earlier both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 can be pre-ordered as of today and should ship on October 22nd. The 13.5-inch Intel version starts at $999, while the 15-inch one starts at $1,199.
