Huawei P40 Pro+ is a beast of its own

by on26 March 2020

Gets Leica Penta Camera system, ceramic coating, and fast wireless charging

In addition to the P40 and the P40 Pro, Huawei also announced the P40 Pro+, a direct answer to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which gets an upgraded camera system, special ceramic coating, and faster charging.

The design and hardware are the same, but with special ceramic coating

Taking a page out of Samsung's book, Huawei also decided to have three flagship smartphones in its new P40 series, with the P40 Pro+ as the one that gets you all the bells and whistles, and the best that the company has to offer.

The P40 Pro+ has the same design and the same screen as the P40 Pro, so it shares the same dimensions set at 158.2x72.6x8.95mm, as well as the same 6.58-inch curved 90Hz OLED panel with 2640x1200 resolution, called the "Overflow Display", and a pill-shaped punch-hole in the upper left corner. On the other hand, it is slightly heavier at 226g, probably due to the special ceramic back coating.

Huawei spent a couple of minutes talking about this coating, saying that this is a so-called Nanotech Ceramic which undergoes five days of kilning, so it should be more durable. It will be available in Black and White colors and is also IP68 water and dust resistant.

Like the P40 Pro, the P40 Pro+ also features Huawei's flagship Kirin 990 5G SoC, but this time paired up with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

While the battery remains the same 4,200mAh as on the P40 Pro, Huawei gave the P40 Pro+ its 40W SuperCharge, for both wired and wireless charging, but you need to have Huawei's own SuperCharge Wireless Charger Stand (max 40 W) and the Huawei 65 W Power Adapter.

The major update is the camera

Huawei went all in with the camera system on the P40 Pro+. It calls it the Ultra Vision Leica Penta Camera, and just like on the P40 Pro, there is a main Ultra Vision Wide camera with a 50-megapixel RYYB sensor behind 23mm f/1.9 lens with OIS.

You also get an Ultra Wide Cine camera module with 40-megapixel sensor and 18mm f/1.8 lens, a 10x Optical Telephoto camera with 8-megapixel sensor for 10x optical zoom with 240mm f/4.4 lens and OIS, another 3x Optical Telephoto camera module with an 8-megapixel sensor and 80mm f/2.4 lens with OIS, and 3D ToF camera for depth sensing.

Huawei was keen to note that the 10x Optical Telephoto camera is the world's first multi-reflection super periscope telephoto lens with 178 percent higher optical path, dual-axis OIS, and 5 times light reflection, providing 10x optical zoom, 20x hybrid zoom, and 100x max zoom.

The camera system certainly sounds impressive on the paper, so hopefully, we will see the P40 Pro+ on the DXOMARK camera review soon enough.

The front selfie camera remains unchanged, and you get the same 32-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture and autofocus, backed by a depth camera which is the IR sensor used for unlocking the phone.

Extra zoom camera, 256GB of storage and ceramic coating come with a steep price

Strangely, the Huawei P40 Pro+ won't launch in April, as the rest of the P40 series, but rather in June 2020. Huawei did not give any specific details regarding this delay.

The Ultra Vision Leica Quad Camera system, which is pretty much an extra zoom camera module and few other updates, as well as a special ceramic back coating certainly come at a price as the P40 Pro+ will sell at €1399, which is significantly higher than €999 for the P40 Pro.
