Foldable phone with two screen

Xiaomi has brought back its Mix series with the new Mi Mix Fold, Xiaomi's first foldable smartphone which comes with cutting-edge features like the flexible and foldable AMOLED screens, Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 888 SoC, triple-sensor main camera with 108MP main sensor, and more.

While there is no word if the phone will be available outside of China, the specifications and the looks of the phone are pretty stunning. The phone itself measures 173.3x133.4x7.6 mm when unfolded and 173.3 x69.8x17.2mm when folded, and weighs 317g in glass and 332g in the ceramic version. As its weight suggests, there will be a version with a glass back (Gorilla Glass 5) and a version with a ceramic back, backed by an aluminum frame.

Two screens for some folding fun

The main feature is the foldable design, which includes "the main" 8.01-inch foldable AMOLED screen with 4:3 aspect ratio, 2480x1860 resolution, 387ppi of pixel density, 1.07b colors, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support, and 600nits of brightness.

The external screen is a 6.52-inch flexible AMOLED screen with 2520x840 resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling, TrueColor, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support, and 900nits of peak brightness.

Xiaomi claims that its U-shape hinge is 27 percent lighter and pretty durable, capable of taking one million bends.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, Surge C1, and new cooling system

As expected, the Mi Mix Fold is equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 888 SoC, and it also features Xiaomi's own Surge C1 image processing chip, which should take care of Auto Focus, Auto Exposure, and Auto White Balance. The Snapdragon 888 SoC is paired up with 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage.

Xiaomi decided to use a new "butterfly-type" cooling system which uses a vapor chamber in combination with thermal gel and graphite sheets, providing it with a large dissipation area and cooling both the SoC, 5G antennas, and the fast charging system.

Triple rear camera system with Liquid Lens for telephoto/macro

The camera system includes three sensors. The main 108-megapixel sensor with f/1.8 wide lens and dual pixel PDAF. It is backed up by an 8-megapixel sensor with telephoto 80mm lens with Liquid Lens technology, which is the world's first, and allows it to change its shape and offers 3x optical magnification and also takes care of macro shots. The last sensor on the back is a 13-megapixel sensor with a 123-degree ultra-wide lens.

The front camera is a 20-megapixel sensor behind a 27mm wide lens.

The phone also includes stereo speakers with four drivers, tuned by Harman Kardon, 802.11 6e dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2, and all the usual sensors. The biggest surprise is the side-mounted fingerprint sensor but we guess there was no room for an under-display one.

The battery is a 5020mAh one (two 2,460mAh cells) with 67W fast charging, capable of fully charging the phone in 37 minutes. There is no wireless charging either.

Only for China and starting at CNY10,000

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will only be available in China, at least for now. Xiaomi expects the first units to be shipped out on April 16th and it is priced at CNY10,000 (($1,520/€1,300) and CNY11,000 ($1,680/€1,430) for the 12GB/256GB and 12GB/512GB glass models, while the ceramic one will go for CNY13,000 ($1,980/€1,690).
