Confirmed by AMD

AMD confirmed that Barcelona will ship in August in a press relase it posted on Friday. AMD claims that it will ship parts for revenue by then and systems from AMD platform partners should be available in September.

We're of course talking Opteron parts here, the desktop parts are still some time away. AMD is of course making a lot out of the native quad core design in the press release, but the Barcelona core does have some advantages, such as backwards compatibility.

"Due to its enhanced architecture – it is the world’s first x86 CPU to integrate four processing cores on a single die of silicon – Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors can deliver significant performance and performance-per-watt enhancements over existing processor architectures yet are designed to be backwards compatible with existing AMD Opteron platforms."

AMD will have a range of Barcelona based Opteron CPU's at launch and the top speed will be 2.0GHz with faster versions arriving in Q4. AMD claims up to 40 per cent faster FPU and up to 70 per cent more performance in certain database applications with the Barcelona core at the same clock speed as previous generation of Opteron processor.
