AMD managed to gain x86 market share in the first quarter of 2012, stealing about one percent of the market from Intel.
According to Mercury research, AMD ended the quarter with a 19.1 percent share, up from 18.2 percent in Q4 2011. Intel shed 0.8 percent to end up with 80.2 percent. However, overall x86 shipments declined year-on-year, due to the weak economy and disruptions in HDD shipments.
Mercury attributed AMD’s success to affordable laptops and Llano APUs. AMD will introduce new Trinity and Brazos 2.0 APUs in a matter of weeks, both of which should cover the low end and mainstream segments nicely. Intel on the other hand launched Ivy Bridge this week, but it will take some time before we see cheap Intel parts based on the new 22nm architecture.
