Nvidia announces Tegra X1

by on05 January 2015

Erista is the Tegra X1

Nvidia is starting the year aggressively. It just introduced a chip called Tegra X1 and this is what we used to know as Errista. The X probably comes from the fact that Erista is the son of Logan and guess what Logan in the X man. It is a 20nm chip, Nvidia’s first.

The Tegra X1 has a 256-core Maxwell GPU and an 8-core 64-bit CPU, with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 CPU cores. It fits the tablet form factor an will go after the automotive market as well. The chip runs 4K video in sixty frames per second on 10-bit precision. It supports the latest H.265 and VP9 video codecs used by YouTube and Netflix.

It is DirectX 12 compatible and it is the most power efficient mobile chip Nvidia made so far. The company claims it is faster than the Apple A8X, at least in graphics demos. It is world’s first 1 teraflops mobile chip in FP16 floating point unit computation. It can run Unreal Demo at 10W and you a needed 100W GPU to run this just a few years ago.

Automotive is probably the first industry to get it at least in a demo form and Nvidia is not ready to talk about any actual consumer products. We expect to see some tablets based on the Tegra X1 later this year and it will be the fastest GPU around. It will be interesting to pit it against the Snapdragon 810, but then again Qualcomm's flagship chip is going after a different market segment.
