Qualcomm lands lots of orders next year

14nm FinFET LPP Snapdragon 820 saved its bacon

Qualcomm appears to have had a sudden rash of orders for its chips, leading some to speculate that might be the reason the outfit did not try to hive off its chip business.

Digitimes deep throats claim that Qualcomm is expected to secure the bulk of chipset orders for high-end Android smartphones in 2016. Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and Xiaomi have decided to adopt the company's Snapdragon 820 CPUs.

Qualcomm has been suffering since the Snapdragon 810 suffered from overheating problems but its quad-core 14nm FinFET LPP Snapdragon 820 appears to be a winner. Not only doesn’t it catch fire it also improves performance and battery life.

The Snapdragon 820 has won design-in in more than 70 models of smartphones and terminal-end devices with the first wave of models to hit the market in the first quarter of 2016.

The flagship models of Samsung and HTC are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016, while those from LG and Sony Mobile will come in the second quarter.
Earlier this week, Qualcomm surprised many by not splitting off its chipmaking business and becoming a patent troll. The move had been seen by its leading shareholders is the best thing, given that its chipmaking business was pants.

However this week, not only did Qualcomm decide not to hive off its chipmaking business, but it also appears to have convinced the shareholders it was a good idea.
We guess having your chips appear in most of the high-end phones next year is a sign that the results will be good if you don’t do something daft like sell off what looks like a money spinner.
