Support for FHD+ displays and Quick Charge 4

At its 4G/5G Summit, currently held in Hong Kong, Qualcomm also unveiled its newest Snapdragon 636 SoC, a mid-range chipset with octa-core Kryo 260 CPU part, Adreno 509 GPU, support for FHD+ displays, X12 LTE modem and Quick Charge 4.

Based on 14nm FinFET manufacturing process, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC brings certain improvements compared to the Snapdragon 630, including up to 40 percent higher CPU performance with its 64-bit Kyro 260 eight-core CPU clocked at up to 1.8GHz. It also comes with Adreno 509 GPU, which should provide up to 10 percent more performance compared to the Adreno 508 GPU. The chipset supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4 dual-channel 1333MHz RAM.

As noted, the Snapdragon 636 supports displays with up to FHD+ (2160x1080) resolution, has support for the rear main camera with one 24-megapixel or two 16-megapixel sensors, along with Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP and Qualcomm Clear Sight, up to 1080p@120fps or 4K@30fps video recording and 4K video playback and more. When it comes to audio, it integrates both Qualcomm aptX codec and Aqstic audio technologies,

Connectivity-wise, it comes with all the usual connectivity options including 802.11ac Wave 2 dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS and SBAS, RF with Qualcomm TruSignal and USB 3.1. It also features Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem with LTE Cat.13 uplink (64-QAM with 2x20MHz carrier aggregation) and LTE Cat.12 downlink (256-QAM and 3x20MHz carrier aggregation), offering peak download and upload speed of 600 Mbps and 150 Mbps. The modem also supports LTE dual SIM, VoLTE, VoWiFi and HD and Ultra HD Voice (EVS).

One of the big parts of the Snapdragon 636 SoC is the support for the Quick Charge 4 standard, which was announced earlier this year. While there are still no chargers that support it, the technology promises 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient charging compared to the previous generation with zero to 50 percent charge in 15 minutes.

According to Qualcomm, the new chipset should start shipping to its customers during next month so we can expect some of the first devices early next year, in best case scenario.
