Intel also shows 28W low-power U-series 8th gen CPUs

Quad-core, Iris Plus IGP, and a new chipset

In addition to the new 8th gen performance mobile Coffee Lake parts, Intel has also announced four new SKUs that will be a part of its U-series (ultra-low power) mobile CPUs, featuring four-core/eight-thread design, new Iris Plus IGP with 128MB of eDRAM, new 300-series chipset, and Intel Optane memory support to the thin notebook market.

There are four new SKUs, all of which come with the same 28W TDP, support for dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory, Intel Iris Plus GPU with 128MB of eDRAM and Intel Optane Memory support. The flagship offering is the Core i7-8559U, a quad-core/eight-thread CPU with 2.7GHz base and 4.5GHz Turbo Boost 2.0 clock, and 8MB of cache.

The flagship Core i7-8559U also comes with Iris Plus Graphics 655 IGP with 128MB of eDRAM and 300/1200MHz clocks.

The flagship is closely followed by two Core i5 SKUs, the Core i5-8269U and the Core i5-8259U, both quad-core/eight-thread parts with 6MB of cache. The Core i5-8269U works at 2.6GHz base and 4.2GHz Turbo clocks while the Core i5-8259U works at 2.3GHz and 3.8GHz Turbo clocks. Both of these come with the same Iris Plus Graphics 655 IGP with 128MB of eDRAM working at 300MHz base and 1050/1100MHz Turbo clocks. 

The entry-level offer is the lone Core i3-8109U model, which is a dual-core/four-thread SKU with 4MB of cache and 3.0GHz base and 3.6GHz Turbo clocks. Strangely, the Core i3-8109U has the same IGP, the Iris Plus Graphics 655, with 128MB of eDRAM and 300MHz base and 1.05GHz Turbo clocks.

Of course, the new U-series 8th gen Coffee Lake CPUs will make use of the new mobile 300-series chipset which brings enhanced audio and I/O capabilities including integrated Intel Wireless-AC and USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps).

Intel also did not reveal on when we can expect notebooks using these chips but hopefully, some rather big design wins are just around the corner.
