Redmi 9C review is a value Everest

by on08 October 2020

Review: With promotion code 94.7 $ 6.53-inch great phone

Xiaomi has run with its Redmi series for many years, and these phones usually are designed not to break the bank but still offer decent performance and quality. Redmi 9C is a 110 Euro/USD phone with a 5000 mAh battery, 6.53-inch screen, and MediaTek Helio G35 that offers decent performance for the entry-level.

The review was a good experience for me, too, as I usually spend time with a costly device sitting on top of the food chain, but Redmi 9C is surprisingly good for an average user as a day-to-day phone. As expected the phone was sometimes a bit laggy, but considering it costs 1/10th of a high end phone, the overall user experience was still impressive.

Package

Redmi 9C comes in a nicely packed box, and we tested the Redmi 9C Sunrise Orange version of the phone with 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM. A version with 64GB ROM is slightly more expensive, and it is worth considering.

The box includes a sim tray remover, Xiaomi MDY-09-EW 10W charger (5V 2A), that looks like a slightly thicker version of the iPhone 8 charger. The box includes USB Type-A to Micro USB cable, a warranty card, and a brief manual. We learned that this is standard for most phones these days, even in this market segment, but we did miss seeing earbuds included in the package.

Redmi 9C is a rather large phone with a big 6.53-inch screen. It measures 164.9 x 77 x 9 mm (6.49 x 3.03 x 0.35 in) and weighs 196 g (6.91 oz). The 6.53-inch screen is based on IPS LCD technology and 1600x720 pixel resolution in a 20:9 aspect ratio.

The phone ships with MIUI 12 and Android 10 operating system out of the box. MediaTek G35 SoC powers the Redmi 9C phone. The Octa-core G35 comes with 4x2.3 GHz Cortex-A53 and 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. The 32GB storage version comes with 2GB RAM while the 64GB storage version comes with 3GB RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage.

MediaTek G35 features PowerVR GE8320 GPU that will be enough for good video playback and entry-level gaming.

The rear camera has four lenses and 13 MP, f/2.2, 28mm (wide), 1.0µm, PDAF, 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro), 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth), LED Flash, and HDR support. The maximum supported video format stops at 1080p@30FPS.

The selfie camera supports the same 1080p@30FPS and 5 MP still images, f/2.2, (wide), 1.12µm. It works just fine.

Phone design

Once you open the box, you see a big phone with a big screen with a rather discrete in-display camera on top. The 81.1 percent screen-to-body ratio is rather good, especially at sub 100 $ / Euro price point.

The left-hand side has a SIM tray that takes either two nano-SIM cards or a combi of a microSD and a single SIM card. The right-hand side has a power button and volume buttons. The top still has a 3.5 inch port for the headphones while the bottom of the phone has a microphone opening, micro USB charger port, and a speaker grill.

The back has three cameras, and a LED module block in the top left corner, and a fingerprint sensor. I have to admit that the orange finish on the phone looked very stylish with a striped pattern across the finish.

Testing everyday usage

First, we tried to open up a bunch of websites, and it all worked well. It is not the fastest phone we have ever used, but since this is a 110 Euro phone, we think it showed rather good performance. The 6.53-inch HD+ 1600 x 720 IPS display is good for the price class. Netflix and YouTube played every video we could throw at it without any issues and stuttering. The phone has a rear placed fingerprint reader that worked as well as you expect.

It is important to mention that despite the usual 4G bands, the phone supports Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. In this market segment, we expect that many people will end up attached to inexpensive home Wi-Fi rather than download all from the 4G network and sometimes expensive plans.

The audio was crisp and pleasant, well above what we expected.

MIUI

The phone comes with MIUI 12 out of the box and Android 10. During test time, we had the option to update to 12.0.5 stable global ROM that worked just fine, and it included theAndroid security patch level from September 2020. There is always an option to installed Google Gboard and a different launcher in case people don’t like iOS inspired MIUI, but we came to peace with this software as it heavily leans on Android.

Camera

The Redmi 9C brings a 13-megapixel primary camera f/2.2, 28mm (wide) supporting Phase detection autofocus (PDAF), 2MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture, 2-megapixel depth sensor.

PDAF slightly blurred background photos look greats, and we didn’t expect that this technology has already shifted to an entry-level phone.

Daylight pictures were quite good, while we could see some intensive noise in a difficult light environment and evening phones. The results are not out of the ordinary, but the camera would serve well for this market segment. The macro could not focus too close, but it was still impressive that it did a great job finding the optimal distance.

Benchmarks

Redmi9CGeek2

AnTuTu v8- 93,720
Geekbench – 147 (Single-Core), 533 (Multi-Core)
3DMark SSE – 462 (OpenGL ES 3.1), 621 (Vulkan)
PCMark – 5,117 (Work 2.0)
AndroBench 5.0.1 – 268,54 MB/s (Seq. Read), 181,25 MB/s (Seq. Write)

The phone obviously doesn't deliver world-class scores, but for an everyday driver under 100 USD / Euro, one must expect some lag in operations but still decent performance.

Conclusion

Redmi 9C is a great value phone. Starting just around 100 Euro / USD pricing, it is a great value phone for 2GB /32GB version. We would suggest that one considers the 3GB RAM and 64GB option for the ones who need more storage. The 2GB / 32GB version has the micro SD slot that would let you expand your storage for a small price.

It will play a decent sound, play videos, let you surf the net, and everything that works on other phones will work here too. It is an incredible value phone that will serve at the entry-level point of the market, and it will still offer a nice 6.53 inch 720p screen with a reasonable small bezel.

Xiaomi did a good job with Redmi 9C, and to make it a sweeter deal, BangGood has offered our readers a special code and a discount on this phone. Using BGFD9C232 code, Redmi 9C drops to $94.79(HK warehouse)/$102.69(ES Spain warehouse), making it an incredible value. You can buy Redmi 9C phone here, just apply the code to get the discount. The 102 dollars special deal price for a phone shipped from Spain translates currently to less than €88 price. It is a great offer and should not be missed, as these prices for a limited number of devices. It is even cheaper when ordered from Hong Kong, making this an incredible value.
