Hacked iPhones being disabled

Apple cites security reasons for the bans

Apple is getting more aggressive about how it will deal with those who hack their iPhones going forward: Apple is disabling the user’s Apple ID upon connection to iTunes. The iPhone brings up a message that reads, “This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons,” and there is nothing else stated beyond that.

While the bans are apparently not widespread yet, it appears that this is Apple’s response to an exploit recently released that is being called XEMN. While there is some debate over how or why Apple chose to take this step, it does seem that this is another case of Apple trying to get more forceful in addressing complaints that the security on the iPhone is weak.

The news that Apple is taking this action might provide a preview of how it can deal with large numbers of hacked phones if they choose to do so. From the latest frontline reports that we hear, Apple has not as of yet started banning phones that were simply hacked using the “jail break” or “unlocker” type hack, but that does not mean that they are not considering it. We will have to wait to see what happens next, but it does appear that Apple has had enough.
