When will GTA 5 arrive?

Conflicting info still points to 2012 release
Despite the news circulating on the web over the last few days, our sources whisper to us that many have it wrong and there likely will not be a Grand Theft Auto 5 release in 2011. While some speculate that it will be released yet this year, it apparently does not seem that this is going to happen despite the fact that it has been three years since the last major release in the franchise.

While Rockstar did release two major content additions for GTA IV, the company has been very quiet about the future of the franchise, other than sort of admitting that a new installment is in development. The major reason for speculation that a holiday release this year is the goal is due to the fact that contracts of some key personnel responsible for the GTA franchise expire in January 2012, and it would be favorable to their negotiating position to deliver GTA 5 before their contracts end.

Some of our sources say that the lack of any information about Max Payne 3 might also be a clue that resources are being directed toward the development of GTA 5. This seems to agree with what industry analyst, Michael Pachter, believes is the case.

In any event, all seem to be in agreement that we will likely hear about GTA 5 in June at E3 when Rockstar is expected to make an announcement. Still, you never know what the future might hold; but rest assured our crystal ball says that we will see another release in the Grand Theft Auto franchise at some point very early next year.

They should either release in 2011 or wait for the new consoles to come out. GTA4 was already pushing the current consoles to breaking point so GTA5 at best will just be GTA4 set in a different city.

+ some new features and different character, just like GTAs before, where is the problem ?

I don't care when, as long as it comes out for next-gen consoles as well, whenever they might come.

I'd hate it if GTA V was released only for the 360/PS3 just months before the release of new consoles (just like San Andreas).

I couldn't stand buying a new console, and then having to wait s few years for the next GTA.

The problem comes from if everyone thought like that then we would still be on the overhead 2D world of the original GTA.

I am not saying that no improvements to GTA4 would be a bad game as i loved that game but i'm just saying that we need next gen consoles for better games so don't waste too long on GTA5 if its just going to be on the old consoles.

Or just get a PC, and all your problems about performance/gfx are solved...tsk tsk fanbois.

Better visuals dont make better games, till there is new console generation, it will take time, the current still makes a lot money, why investing in new ?

@thematrix606
True.

Given the first trailer for GTA4 came out a year before its eventual release in April 2008 I'd doubt GTA5 will arrive this year. We've not heard a peep about it really.

I def think it will arrive before the next gen consoles as I think they are at least 2 years away.

Interesting about the Max Payne resources but I suppose no-one can be 100% sure.

I always get the feeling it's one major title at a time and we'll not hear anything much until after or around the time of LA Noir's release - otherwise the focus of the marketing is detracted from that title.

If only that was true. Sadly, 99% of games are made for PS3/Xbox as that is where the money is. As a result most programmers don't spend months on graphical details that consoles can't even use so games will only look as good as consoles can cope with.

Yes, GTA4 looks better on the PC but its only because of higher res and longer draw distances, nothing special. We need next gen to make them truly better.

Ported games will always be poor when there is such a massive gulf in power from consoles to PCs. I would be surprised if Crysis 2 looks much better than the original Crysis purely because console couldn't begin to even play that!

@ loadwick

Completely agree. Perfect example of console performance determining the backward port to PC is Dead Space 2. Graphically it is a step backward from the original - almost cartoon like in places.

Fortunately some major companies are going to older paradigms and developing for PC and reducing quality to meet the requirements for current gen consoles.

Release of the next gen consoles may be the first time both PC and console have almost identical abilities and with dev tools becoming more port friendly it seems the majority of games will be hopefully be cross-platform (with the exception of the evil iOS...shudder)

The next Xbox will be more of a Comp-sole...Now where is my Kinect for PC!?
