New Nintendo Wii U has AMD Radeon

Written by Fuad Abazovic

It's official
Not that we haven’t told you this before, but as of last night, AMD went on the record telling the world that its GPU is part of the new Nintendo gaming console.  Naturally AMD didn't spill any important details about the GPU itself, but we can tell you that it is not a Fusion chip but rather an embedded graphics card.

The current test phase has to involve a 40 nm prototype chip, something based on the Southern Islands but the real production chip might actually be based on a shrink version in 28nm, codenamed Northern Island.  Of course the chip won’t be identical to a real GPU but it will share many similarities.

"AMD shares Nintendo's excitement for the new HD entertainment experience planned for the Wii U console," said David Wang, corporate vice president of Silicon Engineering, AMD. "We're proud to provide our leading-edge HD multimedia graphics engine to power the new entertainment features of the console. Nintendo is a highly-valued customer and we look forward to the launch in 2012."

According to our insiders we also learned that AMD might have won all consoles this time around, Sony included. You may recall that Nvidia made some pretty nice deals when Sony cae calling, but this will most likely cost Nvidia a next generation console deal with Sony.

Most recent news from various gaming magazines claim the new Xbox and Playstation won’t come until 2014, but we're still hoping to catch at least a sneak peek at some of them already next year.

Well, the real good news, is that it will have 1080P support. That says a lot by itself.

The bad news is, that it will still play XBOX and PS ports, lol.

Here's hoping for at least 1GB of video ram and 1GB of system ram.

Is there a 40nm node available, as the article suggests though? hmm....

I don't know if i should be happy or sad. No doubt the underdog has taken fight to the finish to Nvidia and taught them good, but if this leads to monopoly, than this is bad news for all of us.

@Jigar

Well obviously no one wants monopoly, we want competition, and we don't want any one company entirely dominating be it Intel, AMD, Nvidia or anyone else. Customers will be happy and The market will be in balance as long as everyone keeps a check on every-other.

Nvidia messed this up pretty much all by themself and with a little help by fusion and sandybridge to put the nail in the coffin.
How long till dedicated graphics by intel, or what maybe was nvidia ? :P

Well Consoles is just one market and I welcome this for now, nVidia could use a slight beating, this will hopefully lead nVidia to be more competitive, and work hard for next generation, instead of screwing everyone over.

But I agree, no one should have monopoly really.

It's not, it's a low margin, but it secures a steady income and guaranteed for little work, its like getting a free muffin after a full meal everyday for a few years, you don't need it if the meal is good but certanly isnt bad.

If, and it's still a big if from where we're all standing, AMD have all three next gen consoles, then AMD are going to have a serious amount of bread and butter income rolling in over the next 7 - 8 years. It also gives them a head start in bidding for the gpu contrats on the gen after that.

I could swear I've seen you post about how the Xbox360 is the best console ever(I sort of agree as it's what I have). But yet you think that AMD graphics is bad for consoles wtf?!

Also your posts doesn't make any kind of damn sense, you need to qualify these statements, I know you're a fanboy/troll, but it considering you keep posting here you could atleast try and make sense.
